An explosion tore through a 30 story Tenneco Oil Co refinery tower in Chalmette Louisiana, killing eight workers and injuring ten. Authorities feared two more men were dead. rescue crews searched the wreckage through the night as officials investigated a possible gas leak or welding activity.
Ford delegates say it would be poor politics to reveal a running mate early while unrest simmers over his prospect list. A Southern GOP leader cited a White House official promising a mainstream, conservative friendly choice, though Clarke Reed of Mississippi questions such assurances.
NBC and CBS will provide gavel-to-gavel live coverage from the Republican National Convention in Kansas City. ABC expanded its plan from eight to thirteen hours of live coverage due to heightened battle for the nomination, with ABC News ready to go live if events warrant.
Washington AP reports the first vaccine will not be available until late September, about two months before the peak of the flu season. Dr Meriwether, head of the national immunization program, says in full operation over one million Americans daily will be vaccinated on a first come basis. California Governor Jerry Brown says Jimmy Carter is the only person who can lead the nation and he will support him despite policy differences. Hung Wai Ching a Hawaii financier and Ford campaign finance chair is appointed to the Postal Service board of governors. Sen Hiram Fong recommended him citing his GOP fundraising work five years after promises to separate politics from the service.
California spent 16 months and over 2 million dollars to convict three men already imprisoned for an Aug. 21, 1971 escape attempt at San Quentin. Johnny L. Spain, serving a life term for murder, was found guilty of killing two guards and conspiring with George Jackson, who was shot by a guard.
The Aiken area will see more hot and cloudy conditions this weekend with high temperatures reaching the 90s. Showers and thunderstorms are possible in the afternoons and evenings, with nightly lows in the 70s.

Councilman Lucas Ray collected 25 petitions to take to Wag Ner. master petition to be presented at Tuesday County Council meeting by Arthur B Emrich Jr.
