Judge Gives Backup Sentences in Federal Cases
A Charleston federal judge issued three alternative sentences in two cases after a Supreme Court ruling casting doubt on federal sentencing guidelines. Judge Patrick Duffy sentenced Troy White to nearly six years and Pinkney Lee Gamble Jr. to about 13 1/2 years for gun crimes linked to drugs, with the third sentence based on an unenhanced guideline.

Virus suspected in May carp die-off in two lakes
In Pineville two lakes Moultrie and Marion may host a viral carp die-off with an estimated 50 000 carp killed in May. Auburn researchers detected Koi herpes in samples but could not confirm causation. DNR biologist Scott Lamprecht cautions the virus is not known to harm humans and may signal broader disease spread via wildlife or boat-borne mud.
