Two Officers Shot In Drug Operation

York AP reports two men were arrested after a drug operation shooting wounded two officers. Rock Hill Officer Vincent Jeter, 32, in good condition, was hit in the hip at Piedmont Medical Center. York Sgt. James Smith, 38, in fair condition, suffered a gunshot wound to the neck at Carolinas Regional Medical Center.

Rival Families Clash Over Name of Rural Road

In Sumter two families dispute the naming of a rural route. The Goodsons say the road remains Goodson Road while Heltons demand Helton Road, noting they say they outnumber the Goodsons. The Heltons recall the road being nameless until about a decade ago after officials asked residents for a name but none were home. In Columbia, SC the Labor Department reports 1993 on the job deaths fell 14 percent from 1982 with 86 deaths. Homicides and highway fatalities tallied 21 each in 1993, versus 24 and 18 in 1992.
