Wish Granted With Execution

Convicted murderer Frank J. Coppola 38 chose execution after a swift Supreme Court ruling. He died at 11 27 p.m. EDT, the fifth U S inmate executed since 1976 and the first in Virginia in 20 years, despite last minute appeals. Plane Crash Near Okefenokee Swamp Claims Two From Augusta Area

Searchers sought the identity of a downed Piper Cherokee found on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp. The plane had departed Daniel Field Friday with Lisa Boydston 24 of North Augusta and Bryan Rankin 27 of Martinez both Savannah River Plant employees. A helicopter was to lift the wreckage today as authorities continued to investigate the fate of those aboard.

Gloverville Man Charged After Barrett Street Shooting

Joseph Cecil Bell of Barrett Street Gloverville faces assault and battery with intent to kill after a shooting on his property. He posted $20,000 bond. Bert Baker of General Delivery Gloverville is listed in fair condition at Talmadge Hospital after being shot at least once in the back with a 22 caliber rifle.
