President Bush faced intense pressure as he weighed funding embryonic stem cell research. He spoke to the nation about his decision in an 11 minute address, outlining a cautious path through a politically delicate issue.
A.L. Corbett Middle School parents and the school board approve an optional uniform code for the coming year. Students are urged to dress within guidelines with no disciplinary action for noncompliance. The school also plans a large demolition and renovation project this year.

U S Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham announced 5 million dollars in community transition assistance for the South Carolina Advanced Technology Park adjacent to the Savannah River Site. He praised SRS work in Cold War defense and environmental management and said the site has a bright future in nonproliferation roles.
The Dixie Boys 13-year-old World Series bid went to Jackson Tennessee after a single vote, ending Aiken’s chance to host the national tournament. Kim Coleman of Citizens Park Athletic Programs noted Jackson had not hosted a World Series in about 25 years, while Aiken last hosted in 1996.
Senator Thomas Moore says Aiken County needs full magisterial staff and Gov Hodges has sent a magistrate nomination to the Senate for confirmation. Since February, Aiken County’s senators have debated a recommendation to fill the position.
Aiken County legislative chair Rep. James Roland Smith urges a recurring 40 million yearly commitment to fund new school buses. He says 60 to 70 percent of statewide buses need replacement and cites a looming crisis prompting backing from Aiken County school leaders.
Columbia officials say the city and sponsors would need about 1 million dollars to host the Aloha Bowl, renamed the Palmetto Bowl, with roughly 150000 dollars each from Columbia and Richland and Lexington counties and about 50000 dollars from local sponsors. City Council member Jim Papadea argues the payoff could reach 10 million over a four day event, referencing Mobile Alabama and the GMAC Bowl. The proposal faces hurdles in convincing USC and surrounding counties and awaits the South Carolina board discussion.
