Two Die In Separate Wrecks In Aiken County

Two Aiken County residents died in separate crashes Saturday night and Sunday morning. John Dell Dunlap, 45, of 484 Greenwich Drive in Aiken, died after his 2001 Honda Accord ran off US 25 south of Edgefield, hit the road’s center line and a oncoming car. He was not belted and was ejected. Colonda Gore, of Sumter, and three passengers in the other car were treated for minor injuries and released. Alcohol was a factor. Less than four hours later, Alicia Frazier, 21, Wagener, died when her 1998 Mercury Mystique ran off Holiness Church Road. See WRECKS, Page 10A.

Unseasonal Heat Break Draws Crowds to H Odell Weeks Center

Unseasonably cool conditions brought residents to H Odell Weeks Activities Center in Aiken for a Sunday outing. The area saw a high of 86 degrees and sunny skies as a high pressure system offshore keeps Midlands dry and gradually warmer through midweek.

Sales tax holiday draws big crowds to Aiken Staples

The final day of South Carolina's sales tax holiday drew large crowds to Staples on Pine Log Road in Aiken. Shoppers like the Tam family and Augusta residents said tax-free back to school supplies and electronics made the trip worthwhile amid crowded aisles and long checkout lines. Local manager Alan Newsome called it huge and growing each year.

Duran to chair Spanish program at USC Aiken

Dr. Victor Duran becomes foreign language department chair at USC Aiken and plans a Spanish major along with continued German French and Italian study. He aims to expand Spanish access to the public and to health professionals business staff and emergency personnel amid growing Latino populations in the Carolinas.

Habitat for Humanity marks 50th home in local build

The Aiken County Habitat for Humanity celebrated its 50th Commemorative Build in Warren Ridge with three houses under construction. Frank Cunningham praised sponsors and churches as crowds toured homes and heard speakers including Gib Edson and Senator Tommy Moore. Patricia Green thanked volunteers as the homeowner of 304 St Johns Place.
