City Opens Industrial Park Expansion After Sewer Line Upgrade

City Manager Roland Windham told the city council the Bridge Creek sewer line is now operational directing waste to the Savannah River treatment plant unlocking expansion of the Industrial Park. The project met a June 17 1988 deadline after three extensions with 65 percent of local costs funded by Aiken and 55 percent by a federal grant. The county approved a five year loan for the remaining costs as area firms consider locating near the Savannah River Plant. Charlie Hughes of the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce outlined regional cooperation with nearby chambers and the Economic Development Council to ready the county for the expansion and contractor changes. An advisory committee was formed after a study trip to Oak Ridge Tennessee to assess needs and remedies. Hughes cited a projected 1500 to 1600 new arrivals and retirees tied to the contractor transition, a figure later revised.
