Fatal Sunday crash blamed on faulty tire in North Augusta

Further investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol found a faulty fire caused the Sunday afternoon accident that killed a North Augusta woman and left three others hospitalized. Aiken County Coroner Sue Townsend said she received information from Highway Patrol that the right rear tire on the Ford Bronco driven by Amanda Davis separated.

Rob Mitchell of Pottsdown Pa won a 30 year old battle for Black Betsy Shoeless Joe Jacksons famed bat paying 57610 dollars in a 10 day eBay auction. The sale drew only two bidders and may set a record price for a baseball bat.

Perry returns controversial payment from state contractor

Aiken Sen. Perry returned a disputed payment he had received from a state contractor. The Aiken Standard previously claimed he offered no comment. Perry says he did call the paper with a remark, but it was not printed. He spoke with the reporter after returning to town.

Two year old killed by truck in Edgefield Road incident

A two year old, Jaylin Kirk, died when a pickup rolled over him at a residence on Edgefield Road in Aiken County. Sue Townsend said the death is an accidental traffic fatality with no foul play suspected. He had joined a grocery trip group earlier and slipped under the truck during unloading. He was pronounced dead at 9 10 p m.

Secretary of Energy to visit Savannah River Site Thursday

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham will visit the Savannah River Site on Thursday per Sen. Strom Thurmond’s office. He will tour the tritium and defense waste processing facilities, view environmental restoration projects, and meet community leaders. Thurmond cites ongoing discussions on nuclear-material handling, oxide fuel program, Site infrastructure, and environmental management, plus potential co location of civilian nuclear plants on Energy Department reservations.

Five Aiken County school projects pass site inspections

Officials from Aiken County Public Schools announced that five major construction projects passed on site inspections by the Office of School Facilities. Deputy Superintendent Gallman thanked principals staff parents and builders for completing work in time for the start of school.
