The Labor Department said first time unemployment claims increased by 24 000 to 318 000 for the week, the first rise in four weeks and still below earlier high levels. The unemployment rate edged up to 5.4 percent in July and job growth slowed to 199 000.

A South Carolina DSS official notes the new Family Independence Act allows license revocation for parents behind on child support. As of month end, 57 licenses targeted, with 46 driver licenses and several other permits to be lifted after enforcement actions. More than 1,200 notices have gone to nonpayers.
