Rabies cases rise in Aiken County area county

DHEC reports four animal rabies positives in Aiken County this year three raccoons and one fox up from four cases all of last year. Four residents were treated after exposure and several pets quarantined for 45 days. a Batesburg man is under rabies treatment after a stray cat bite near Johnny Parrish Road.

Caiman Found in Carolina Bay Removed by City Team

A small caiman, a South American relative of the alligator, was captured in Aiken after day-long efforts. Sara Wampole spotted it Sunday and photographed it Wednesday after returning to the scene multiple times. Animal control officer Jeff Wilson, aided by three Savannah River Ecology Laboratory ecologists, tracked and netted the creature, likely released from a pet trade show. The caiman will remain at SREL for education outreach.
