Colorado State University researchers report isolating material bits showing resistance-free behavior up to 70 degrees in repeated two day tests. Prior claims of high temperature superconductivity often appeared in tiny pockets and failed to repeat, highlighting the need for separable, analyzable samples.
McDonald's will keep the Big Mac identical while ending foam containers made with CFCs in the United States. The move, praised on Capitol Hill, aims to curb ozone-depleting chemicals amid wider international talks to cut global CFC production by as much as 95 percent. Clifford Raber of McDonald's says the packaging portion of CFC use is small, but the company acts as a model for the industry.
There is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms tonight with a mid-70s low. Tomorrow should be similar with a mid-90s high and a 30 percent chance of afternoon and evening storms.

In New Ellenton on Chime Bell Road an afternoon brush fire damaged a barn behind Reece's Inc. The barn stored hay and feed while the main building escaped major damage. About 20 to 25 firefighters fought the blaze with four New Ellenton rigs and one Aiken unit aiding. No injuries occurred and heat ware exhaustion noted among crews.
President Reagan and House Speaker Wright propose a Central American peace plan met with doubt in Congress from both parties. Nicaraguan President Ortega welcomed talks offering democracy, cease fire, and a halt to U.S. aid to the Contras in exchange for dialogue. Contra leaders met Reagan and signaled openness to cease fire but with caveats.
Iran lengthened a three day Persian Gulf naval exercise by 24 hours and warned ships to stay clear. It also threatened force against Saudi Arabia over police actions at Iran's missions in Jidda and Riyadh, tied to the Mecca pilgrim deaths.
The federal government announced a two year trial of the experimental drug tetrahydroaminoacridine THA aimed at memory loss in about 300 Alzheimer patients at 17 sites. Early reports show improvement in most treated patients though experts caution THA may not halt disease progression. The plan is led by assistant HHS secretary Robert E Windom and overseen by the FDA.
