A Quick Read Pianist Josef Patchen to Perform in Hopeland Gardens

Pianist Josef Patchen will give a 7 p.m. concert at Hopeland Gardens as part of the Summer Concert Series by the Aiken Recreation Department. Patchen, a composer and recitalist, studied under Robert Spillman and works at Studio South in Augusta. He will play Mozart and Chopin. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. parking at Rye Patch on Berry Road. If rain, the concert moves to South Aiken High.

Court Session Opens at Aiken County General Sessions

Aiken County General Sessions Court opens at the courthouse with Judge James Moore presiding and Solicitor Bob Harte citing a criminal sexual conduct case involving a young girl set for trial this week. About 50 cases are expected to be settled. Richard Mason remains on a contingent docket due to ongoing treatment at the State Hospital. Also on the docket are two housebreakings one burglary and one armed robbery.

North Augusta Considers Rezoning Rapids Subdivision

The North Augusta City Council will meet at 7:30 PM in the municipal building council chambers to rezone part of the Rapids Subdivision from RR residential to PDR planned development residential. A study session follows in the conference room on the building’s first floor.

Aiken County Board to Interview Applicants for Seat

The Aiken County Board of Education will interview candidates to fill Dr Durward Pridgens seat until December 31 at a called meeting tomorrow night. The 7 30 p m session at the Educational Center 3 Edgefield Ave will consider an appointment and discuss the Education Improvement Act including required changes and the new internal auditor job description. An executive session will follow.

Ling Ling the giant panda at the National Zoo gave birth late Sunday to a stillborn cub. Officials said the infant appeared normally developed. sex and cause of death unknown. A necropsy was planned. The mating with Hsing Hsing occurred March 19, their second in nine years.

Truck Crash Dents Graniteville House Causing Heavy Damage

An unmanned Aiken Cablevision truck rolled across the Bowen home front yard and into their den wall at 117 Ridgecrest Drive causing about 15000 dollars in damage. The incident injured an 18 year old, and a 60 year old was knocked from a chair but no serious injuries were reported.

SCE&G Rate Increases Ranked High Nationwide

The study shows SCE&G higher in residential rate increases than most large utilities from 1972 to 1981. Residential rates rose about 169 percent, while CP&L posted 170.6 percent. SCE&G’s commercial and industrial rates jumped 182.6, 339, and 213.5 percent respectively.
