Rising insurance costs threaten wrecker firms across the region
Patsy Willing and Ricky Broomes warn that liability premiums for wrecker operators could nearly double, forcing many firms out of business. Aiken area owners plan a 6 p.m. August 15 meeting at Ryan's Family Steakhouse to map a strategy as premium notices spread to more than two dozen county services. Wording notes premiums rising from about 8 000 to 14 000 annually, with some firms facing 25 000. Officials from the Insurance Commission and DOT may attend, while Rep. Charles R. Sharpe seeks data on the situation. Industry experts say there is no cap on rates and small trucking losses drive higher costs for towing services into a broader premium squeeze.
