South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon and state leaders question how House members claimed mail reimbursements without spending funds. Review of House records shows nearly one third of members sought bulk postage reimbursements averaging about 1900 dollars.
South Carolina coach Lou Holtz said running back Derek Watson has been reinstated to the university and football team and will be available for the September 1 game against Boise State after a suspension in May.
A single car crash on Interstate 20 near Exit 29 in Aiken County caused Donna Rebecca Howard 33 of West Martins Town Road to die. Her infant was ejected and hospitalized in serious condition. The Ford Bronco's right rear tire allegedly blew causing the vehicle to flip multiple times in the median. The incident occurred around 2 30 pm Sunday according to a State trooper. See Wreck Page 7A.
Beech Island gathered around Silver Bluff Missionary Baptist Church for its 251st anniversary known as Mother Silver Bluff. Rev Bennie Holmes led a full service with visitors and a fellowship dinner after hours of preaching and singing. Rev Karlton Howard of Noahs Ark Baptist preached on Proverbs 2918 urging a vision grounded gospel and joy in all circumstances while honoring past generations.
Barry sits over the Gulf Coast into the Panhandle with heavy rainfall and no hurricane winds. Forecasters warn of ongoing flooding as the storm moves slowly north at about 9 mph. Warnings from Apalachicola to Fort Walton Beach are downgraded to tropical storm warnings.
City of Aiken remains focused on water conservation as summer ends. Larry Morris, director of Public Works, urges continued careful use of water despite relief from recent rains. A $25,000 conservation program funds are planned for next summer as guidelines are finalized.
Major General Allen Tackett awarded the West Virginia State Meritorious Service Medal to Charlie Company of the 122nd Engineering Battalion in Granit eville for 13 days of flood cleanup during Southern Storm 2001. The ceremony honored 15 soldiers including 1st Lt. Michael W. Stokes and Sgt. Donald C. Wade.
