Jackson town council approved a public works budget of 96000 for fiscal year 1980 81 an increase of 1600 from the prior year. The meeting also discussed proposed improvements to the Jackson boat landing on the Savannah River.
Wagener town council hired Jack Wingate CPA of Columbia as next year’s town auditor. B P Barber of Columbia won the bid to draft engineering plans for the water grant update. The council authorized the clerk to discuss auto tax collection with Aiken County. ordinance so far increases garbage fees to 3 dollars. Budget talks were tabled with a two week resumption planned.
Salley Town Council voted to hire a new auditing firm for next year, citing reasonable rates per Councilman Plina G. Sharpe. The panel also approved air conditioning for the Crescent City Vocational School cafeteria used for community events, especially during Salley's Chitlin Strut.
Aiken planning and zoning commission meets tomorrow at 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Municipal Building to consider annexation of Aiken Plaza on U.S. 1, where K Mart and Bi Lo stores are located.
J Carrol Busbee announces a county wide petition drive to test the power of citizen action and press politicians to halt drugs at their source. Aiken County and five other South Carolina counties will circulate petitions seeking 80 000 signatures during Blitz Week to address heroin cocaine and pill abuse.
The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce lists rules for the 1980 Aiken’s Makin festival to be held September 25 through 27. Items must be made in Aiken County and in a home environment, with baked goods pre wrapped and labeled. Committee members include Mrs. Al Payne, Mrs. Ruth Ravasz, Ray Jackson, Rick Praete, John Foskett, Henrietta Sanford, Wilson Plunkett.
North Augusta City Council will review granting a $6,173 contract to Harwood Beebe of Spartanburg to design water pressure improvements for Green Acres subdivision. The meeting also discusses a $5,247.84 motor pump replacement at Monticello sewage lift station funded from the Utilities Contingent Fund and adoption of revised covenants for the North Augusta Industrial Park.
W. Harry Busbee, executive vice president of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, told the Aiken Sertoma Club that the chamber will translate community plans into action. He outlined 15 active committees, parkway and arts projects, and efforts to annex county areas for tax base growth while highlighting private funding and community volunteer leadership.
