BP begins static kill attempt to seal blown oil well
BP started forcing mud down the ruptured Gulf well in a bid to permanently seal the biggest offshore spill in U S history. The effort could continue into Thursday with results not known for over a week. Coast Guard official Thad Allen called it a positive step but warned against premature celebration. The plan includes a two direction plug using heavy mud and cement, plus a future bottom kill via an 18 000 foot relief well to inject materials into bedrock 22 miles below.
