USC researchers pursue safer, cheaper helicopter maintenance
At USC an Army funded project uses vibration sensors on helicopters to guide maintenance. Since 1999 about 5 million in contracts support a system with accelerometers that transmit data to monitors. Early results saved 1.7 million in parts and 650 flight hours on Apache and Black Hawk aircraft in SC. More than 250 helicopters now use the system, including 75 in Iraq. The USC center is one of two Army testing sites, with Alabama Huntsville the other.

South Carolina Bridges Labeled Structurally Deficient
State officials announced that over 1,000 of South Carolina’s 8,330 inspected bridges are structurally deficient, a designation tied to the Minnehaha collapse. Bridge safety chief Lee Floyd said the issue signals attention rather than immediate danger, with 10 bridges closed and load restrictions on some spans. The DOT employs 25 inspectors to conduct more than 6,000 yearly inspections across the system.
