The Dixie Boys World Series starts today at Citizens Park in Aiken with a banquet at 6 pm and an opening ceremony at 7 30 pm. Twelve teams and over 180 players and coaches will attend from the South, with volunteers handling tickets and guiding families.
Mary M Cunningham, former director of psychiatric social services at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, filed a July 20 civil suit in Aiken County alleging she was forced to resign for refusing to deny treatment to indigent and uninsured patients. The suit says a senior manager instructed her to avoid accepting such patients and that she was demoted and effectively discharged after resisting. It also alleges the manager drank on the job beginning May 2005 and that Cunningham was replaced by younger white women, violating the Age Discrimination Employment Act.
City offices election opens Monday with mayor Fred Cavanaugh seeking a fifth term. Incumbents Beverly Clyburn and Don Sprawls face re election for Districts 1 and 3. Democratic primaries run Aug 6–13 at Chandler law offices. Republican primaries Aug 6 and 13 at party HQ. Primaries Sept 11, runoff if needed Sept 25. general election Nov 6. Independent Dave Allen announces bid, petitions require 5 percent of registered voters.
A dispute pits Deb C. Schier of Langley Pond against Yvonne Baughman over which Fried Green Tomato Festival is the original. Schier holds an Iron Horse Bar & Grill venue claim in Beech Island while Baughman previously hosted at a Langley Pond site, with both events scheduled Saturday and no clear resolution.
