Ecological pioneers laying groundwork at Savannah River Site
In 1951 three research teams began environmental studies at Savannah River Site, forming the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory and a long running environmental surveillance program. The work, led by Eugene Odum Ruth Patrick and C M Patterson, established baseline ecological monitoring before nuclear operations. The studies helped shape site culture toward environmental stewardship and received later accolades. Bill Reinig, who joined SRS in 1951, notes CNTA leadership.
