A steer weighing 500 to 600 pounds escaped Tuesday from Burbage Meats in Ravenel just before turning into chopped steak. It kicked a wall hole and fled east toward SC Highway 162. Marion Burbage said the steer is not dangerous and will likely vanish quickly if spotted.

Aiken Mayor H Odell Weeks will not seek re election in November at age 83 ending a 40 year public service career beginning in 1942 He cited age and time for someone else to do the job and said he feels great about the city's future after a news conference at city hall Weeks has long held the top post in Aiken and may hold the state record for mayor while stressing pride in maintaining heritage and growth plans.
H Odell Weeks born August 3 1908 stepped into city politics in 1943 and served as mayor from 1946 to 1952 then again from 1957 onward retiring after a valedictory address. Council and department heads praised his loyalty and harmony while workers received thanks.

Admiral Dean Sackett, retired Navy, called the pact a significant step toward cutting long range arsenals by 30 percent while stressing the need for verification and broader national security context.
Investigators study a track switch at the derailment site after an Amtrak Silver Star crash near Camden killed seven and injured at least 78. The 1é-car train, carrying 426 passengers from Miami to New York, derailed in a 79 mph zone and sideswiped freight cars. CSX said prior inspections found no track defects.
