FERC grants a license for a six megawatt hydro project at Gathright Dam Covington VA. Noah Corp of Aiken will administer and share revenues. Plant estimated at 5.8 million dollars with start possible in six months. Thurmond announces 1.6 million federal funds for SC housing. Hospital Corp of America unveils HCA Health Plans. Additional local items include a jury trial date for Aiken cases and a Corvette trivia game announced for 19.95 dollars.

Aiken County officials question Gov. Richard Riley's speaking at a CPA II banquet and a later reception in North Augusta on Aug. 30. Riley says he will discuss public education and will not endorse either side, after learning of a local issue tied to school district centralization.
The House Interior Committee backed a low-level nuclear waste bill restricting out-of-state waste flow to South Carolina. The Udall proposal sets deadlines to cut off access to disposal sites in 1992, with surcharges or denial possible if regions fail to build regional dumps. Senator Thurmond planned to introduce the Udall compromise in the Senate.
Aide center to assist law enforcement would store murder case data statewide under House Bill 2812, says Aiken County Coroner Sue Townsend. The center would coordinate data, issue a forensic pathologist, and aid coroners with procedures, still blocked in committee as the legislature adjourned.
The book closes on sixteen suspected or confirmed murder cases in Aiken County as victims were gunned down in stores on lonely roads and in homes. One case hints at an ambush and kidnapping at a beauty shop.
Linda Bradberry, an Aiken mother and Sunday School teacher, was found dead from a shotgun blast in her car parked in front of a deserted store on a deserted road. She was last seen earlier in the day.
County Councilman Mike Toole announced he is switching from Republican to Democrat, shifting Aiken County Council to a 5 4 Democrat majority. He cited budget and textile industry concerns and said the move reflects his view of representing constituents. Toole has served since 1983 and often aligned with Democrats.
The Department of Energy will hold a scoping meeting in Aiken on August 19 to gather public input for an environmental impact statement on cooling water systems at Savannah River Plant. The EIS will cover cooling water needs for C and K reactors and a nearby coal plant in SRP D-area and assess construction and operation impacts. Two sessions 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at H Odell Weeks Activities Center.
