Clearwater residents urge action to fill or pipe a ditch that runs by Clearwater Elementary School. New Ellenton council opened bids for garbage collection with Brown Sanitation Service offering 50 000 for year one of a three year contract while Brenner Industries Sanitary Container Service bid 66 000. Monthly residential charges would be 4 50 for Brown and 5 00 for Brenner with varied commercial rates. A public meeting on options is set for Monday at the Civic Center and a council vote is planned for August 14.
Aiken County magistrates were told by a state court official to stop processing cases from Aiken and North Augusta. Magistrate L Glenn Holley said Neil Forney advised quitting city work though he noted final decision rested with the magistrates. If extra office help arrives he will continue handling city cases.
North Augusta City Councilman Thomas W. Greene, 45, lost his left eye after a rock was thrown through his car windshield on Five Notch Road. He suffered facial fractures but no serious lacerations. a spokesman said repairs are possible and he may leave intensive care in a couple of days. He was the most seriously injured in a spree harming five motorists.
