Circuit Court Judge Rodney A. Peeples presided over a special term in Aiken adjourning after four days. About 100 cases ended with guilty pleas and trials while many were nolle pressed or dropped. Several defendants pleaded to lesser charges and received varied sentences.
Atty Gen Daniel R McLeod said he should know in a few days when he can travel to Washington for talks with Justice Department officials on South Carolina Senate reapportionment. He added that details will be firmed up next week.
Alger Hiss viewed the three microfilm rolls known as the Pumpkin Papers and declared them useless for espionage purposes. He noted prosecutors did not use the materials in the original case that helped Richard Nixon rise politically.
The Senate approved a bill 84 to 12 to curb strip mining on federally owned coal. It would impose stricter environmental and reclamation standards, though the measure is narrower in scope than earlier proposals and awaits House action.
Five of six sugar companies charged with illegal price fixing pleaded no contest and were fined the maximum 300000 dollars. The firms were named in December indictments of 1974 and had pleaded innocent in January. California & Hawaiian Sugar Co. of San Francisco did not change its plea and will have a trial date set for August 15. Holly Sugar Corp. of Colorado Springs was fined 100000 dollars for two indictments involving the Chicago West and California Arizona markets.
Orangeburg County Deputy Sheriff Clark Ryder was found innocent of murder in the May 10 shooting death of Emanuel Fogle. The jury delivered a unanimous verdict after three hours of deliberation, and Ryder said he plans to resume work after time with his family.
The Labor Department reported July unemployment at 8.9 percent, with total employment rising by 630,000 to 85.1 million. Unemployment fell by 400,000 to 7.8 million, while long term joblessness rose to 3.2 percent of the labor force.
Aiken County Civil Defense prepared for a potential nuclear emergency at the Savannah River Plant. The plan includes 134 shelters, radio and TV alerts, PA patrols, and sheltering for three to six hours in case of leakage or wartime threat.
In Columbia AP reports that South Carolina Electric and Gas will credit present customers $5.40 refunds on August bills after the Public Service Commission rejected its largest rate increase. Former customers will receive checks based on usage, with 864 kilowatt hours per month used for the average calculation.

Donnie Williams receives unsolicited housing advice at a meeting. James K. Lower, longtime Du Pont assistant plant manager, retires after contributing to atomic energy development.
Bloomfield Hills Mich AP authorities planned to question Anthony Giacalone a reputed high ranking organized crime figure in Detroit about the disappearance of former Teamsters Union president James R Hoffa. Giacalone described as Hoffas friend and confidant is among six to be questioned. Hoffa 62 has not been seen since his car was found in a park ing lot. Police say foul play cannot be ruled out and Hoffa's family fears he may be dead.
Forecast calls for little change with partly cloudy and warm conditions through tomorrow. Highs near 90, lows around 70, with a 30 percent rain chance today and Saturday and 10 percent tonight.
