Eureka Man Dies in Hot House Fire

Howard Barnes, 42, died of smoke inhalation in a mobile home fire at 523 Harris Family Circle. The blaze started shortly after midnight, consumed most of the home, and melted a neighbor’s vinyl siding. Barnes was found at the back door as investigators from the State Law Enforcement Division and Aiken County Sheriff's Office probe the incident.

Parsons unveils tech for Savannah River Site waste cleanup

Parsons, based in Aiken, showcases its plan to deploy the Salt Waste Processing Facility at SRS. The project, starting February 2006, will hire about 450 construction workers plus 100 new office staff as it prepares to separate actinides and cesium from salt waste and move high level waste to a repository.

Aiken County EMS raises sparks pay clash with director

The Aiken County Council approved large pay hikes for EMTs to curb resignations and aid recruitment. Paramedics got 17 percent raises while basics and intermediates earned 12 percent. The increases created pay parity concerns with the EMS director and shift managers. The action followed recommendations from the EMS Sub committee, which had urged full division raises. Special Olympics parade opens at Midland Valley High

Council on Aging lends a helping hand in Aiken County

The Aiken Area Council on Aging assists over 1000 seniors who struggle with illness finances and loss. In 2004 they delivered nearly 63000 meals to homebound elders and served 31000 at congregate sites across Aiken Gloverville Jackson North Augusta Wagoner and Windham House. They provided 7000 hours of light housekeeping and other help to more than 100 clients while Best Friend Express transit carried about half of 4500 monthly riders. Funding comes from United Way the City of Aiken and other sources.
