Rivera to fight death penalty on mental illness plan
Rivera faced capital murder charges in SC for killing 17 year olds Tiffaney Wilson and Melissa Dingess and Augusta resident Tabatha Bosdell who vanished in June 2000. Bosdell's skeletal remains were found in October 2000. Attorneys Peter Johnson and Jacque Hawk represent Rivera. In October 2000 deputies arrested him at a Clearwater motel after a tip from Richmond County authorities.

Aiken County seeks fairer PACT grading for students and teachers
Roberson notes lawmakers in Aiken County push to sponsor or concur with a bill that would recognize improvements under the PACT system. The S C Education Oversight Committee has already removed the composite grade and will display the actual performance grade and improvement rating. Schools suffered lower grades last December due to weak improvement scores while reading and math PACT tests and field tests continue for grades 3-8. Eighth graders will face the PACT exit exam as sophomores in 2004 and must pass by senior year to graduate.

Truck Derby: Driver Ida Johnson Hurt in Embankment Crash
State police say Ida Johnson, 33, of Nesmith, drove off the road, struck a guardrail, and rolled down a 20 foot embankment. Johnson was taken to a hospital and faces a charge of driving too fast for conditions as authorities investigate possible sleepiness.
