Hearing today in Rivera case in Augusta court

Accused serial killer Reinaldo J. Rivera was expected to appear for a pretrial hearing in Augusta. The North Augusta man, a former Bridgestone Firestone machine technician, faces charges in four murders. Richmond County Assistant District Attorney Ashley Wright said the hearing was before Judge Rivera.

Truck slides down I 20 embankment injuring driver

An early morning wreck slowed westbound Interstate 20 traffic as a tractor trailer ran off the right side of the road and plunged down an embankment. Authorities cited South Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman Lance Cpl. Kelley Hughes for details.

Doctor Fired at Weston Center Ends Rural Care Era

AL LANGLEY reports Dr Tom Moore, medical director at Margaret J Weston Health Care Center in Clearwater, was escorted from his office by police and placed on 90 days paid leave after administrators Tony Dunn were fired. Moore plans not to return, citing patient care concerns.

Churches unite for National Day of Prayer observance

Dozens of area churches join in the National Day of Prayer with events across CSRA and nationwide under the theme America United Under God. Wagener hosts an interdenominational gathering at 7 p.m. in the town pavilion with hours of prayer. Southwind Fellowship near Aiken holds a 6:30 p.m. service. Students begin Palmetto Achievement Challenge Tests PACT

Aiken County students in grades 3 through 8 started the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Tests, a state mandated exam shaping school report cards and long term retention decisions. Tornado toll rises as eastern states reel from storms

Tornado ravaged cities from Missouri to Maryland left at least six dead and many injured. In Maryland a twister killed three and injured 98, damaging a 10 mile stretch near La Plata and hospital windows. Civista Medical Center leader described frightened survivors. Maryland EM A said 81 injured and 12 critically hurt. Curfew and school closures announced as about 6500 homes lost pow er. Thunderstorms also affected Tennessee Ohio valleys. northern edge brought snow to Wisconsin Minnesota. Marble Hill in Missouri saw a tornado 180 mph wind span two football fields wide. a 12 year old was hurled 50 yards.
