Coroner skews on chlorine role in Graniteville death

Autopsy rules out chlorine as the primary cause of death for Leonard Mathis a 51 year old Graniteville man who died after driving into a chlorine gas plume. Tests continue to determine if the January spill contributed to his death. Coroner Tim Carlton says the death is not yet ruled but investigation continues. Attorney Reginald Simmons says the family awaits final results and is prepared for a inquest or independent expert review. Mathis spent six days in intensive care after the spill and two more in hospital before release.

Kitchen blaze destroys Aiken home on Seneca Avenue

A kitchen fire on Seneca Avenue in Aiken destroyed a single story brick home around 5 p.m. The homeowner and three firefighters were hospitalized for observation and non life threatening injuries. Firefighters prevented spread to nearby houses as they fought the two alarm blaze.
