Man set for death in SC dies case hinges on confessed killer

Richard Charles Johnson awaits a May 3 execution date as his lawyers argue a confession from another woman to the 1986 killing of Trooper Bruce Smalls warrants clemency. Prosecutors note the woman’s mental state and shifting story, while Johnson’s supporters urge mercy, contending innocence. The case traces to a highway stop on I-95 and a sequence of killings and testimonies, with Johnson pleading guilty only to Swanson’s murder and denying Smalls’ death. The governor and state Supreme Court remain in the balance.
