Catawba Land Claim Faces Slim Chances in Congress

State Rep. John Hayes says a bill to block Catawba land claims across 144000 acres in three southern counties likely cannot pass. Hayes led a York County delegation to Washington seeking hearings in June or July before Udall's Interior Committee, which may hold a session in Rock Hill. The Lee proposal would bar tribes from recovering lands in land claim actions, sending the measure to Udall who doubts its chances.
