An official Tass report says Soviet Defense Minister Andrei Grechko died suddenly in Moscow at age 72. The cause was not announced though sources say a heart attack. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Politburo.
Two Virginia suburbs private academies are at center of a new racial integration dispute that could yield a Supreme Court ruling. Two black children and their parents argue private schools may not bar enrollment solely on race. About 3,500 private academies operate in the South with 750,000 pupils.
Two black drivers James Stewart and Eugene Beasley said a Kentucky man Clarence McNear aimed a gun at them aboard a KKK charter bus en route to an antibusing rally. The Cincinnati incident followed at the Greyhound terminal with 25 passengers objecting to Black drivers.
President Ford branded Humphrey Hawkins backed jobs legislation as a dangerous election year ploy and pledged to curb spending. He criticized a measure proposing a national 3 percent unemployment target and government jobs for all adults willing to work, calling it unwise.
Broadcast from Hanoi and Saigon hailed a Sunday election as a success with 99 percent turnout. North Vietnam chose 249 deputies and the South 243, all candidates selected by revolutionary committees. Fred Raeford Johnsons, a 25 year old motorcycle operator, survived after a tractor trailer ran over his head in Raleigh. A witness said the truck’s left rear wheels crushed the helmet, leaving it badly cracked while Johnson sustained bruises and was listed in fair condition at Wake Medical Center.
