Mt Pleasant Baptist Church in Ridge Spring celebrates 175 years with a Saturday anniversary at 2 p.m. featuring a recreated brush arbor, games, and old fashioned activities and a Sunday Founders Day service at 10 a.m. Co chair James Cumbee expects 200 to 250 attendees and notes the church began in April 1831 near Aiken County.
The mountain laurel Kalmia Latifolia is tied to Aiken and surrounding counties as a notable local plant. Ecologist Dr. Rebecca Sharitz notes its typical habitat on hillside slopes in northern South Carolina with occurrences also in Edgefield Barwell and Lexington counties.
The USDA FEIS notes Kalmia flowers bloom from April to June, formed from buds in the prior season. Dr. Harry Shealy theorizes the shrub favors cooler, moisture-rich clay soils, especially on slopes with clay near the surface, explaining profusion in these locations. Please see KALMIA, page 8A.
