South Carolina filed a response opposing the federal motion for extra time in the MOX plant enforcement case. The state seeks an extension only if briefing schedules are set for its pending summary judgment motion and the defendants forthcoming motion to dismiss.
The State challenges the Department of Energy extension from April 25 to May 25 for its response to South Carolina’s summary judgment motion. It asks for a briefing schedule, arguing delays prejudice the state amid MOX program scrutiny and plans to downblending. Reporter: Thomas Gardiner, SRS beat.
Rotary member Mike Pereya returned to the Aiken Club seeking continued support for Guatemala projects. The 2015-16 water filtration effort in Alotenango benefits about 280 villagers, especially handicapped children and families, with a locally funded system and district grants. Future work aims to aid Guatemala City’s garbage-dump children by clothing drives and meals, led by Area 8 clubs. Pereya, a Puerto Rico native with three children and seven grandchildren, thanked Rotarians for their ongoing humanitarian work.
The Mead Hall Episcopal School hosts a one day Strawberry Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Aiken Prep Campus 619 Barnwell Ave. N.W. Admission is free. Vendors offer strawber ries baked goods barbecue and crafts while Mead Hall students perform a talent show and activities include a duck pond bean bag toss train rides and a climbing wall.
