New Ellenton Mayor Says He Was Targeted In Layoffs
New Ellenton Mayor Jim Sutherland was among about 177 Savannah River Site employees laid off early Thursday. Sutherland, an environmental engineer with 15 years at SRS and prior Westinghouse service, said he felt targeted after transfers between divisions and a DWPF move despite opposing it. WSRC spokesman Will Callicott said involuntary separations would total 177 by week’s end, with a broader wave of 300 notices before fiscal year end and 600 to 800 more in 2006.
