Tragedy in Home Ends in Double Shooting

A visitor reported that Austin planned to leave his wife after two months of estrangement. Mrs Price, visiting upstairs, heard a pistol shot and found both spouses dead. the couple had ongoing domestic troubles. The second wife’s family is in Greenwood.

Matthews Fined Five Thousand for Banking Violations

J Pope Matthews pleaded guilty to technical banking violations and was sentenced by Judge John S Wilson in Columbia to pay 5000 or face five to ten years in prison or public works in Richland County. He paid the fine the next day.

South Carolina's tax bills loom over farmers and bootleggers

The General Assembly debates nuisance taxes on cigars tobacco candy and soft drinks plus a one cent tax and new levies on fruit jars hay and more. A 5 mill property levy is planned with Governor Richards expected to veto a large rise. The omnibus revenue bill aims for about 3.1 million this year and includes reimposed soft drinks tobacco and amusements taxes as well as new levies on cards sporting goods and various glass items. A committee to study tax questions is to report in the next session with a general sales tax favored, despite criticism of the panel and process.

Mrs. Lillian Lindley McKie challenges a life sentence for the Augusta murder of her husband George A. McKie. The defense argues letters admitted at trial were not properly rebutting evidence and cites self defense. The Richmond County Superior Court recently denied a similar appeal.

Richmond publisher John Stewart Bryan presented a drop leaf table to the Confederate Memorial Library Society in honor of Charles H. Taylor. Cotton Contest Pays Profits Per Acre in 1926

The report shows an average profit of 51.04 dollars per acre for 1926 cotton contest contestants, versus a state loss estimate of 7.20 dollars per acre. Contest yields averaged 608 pounds lint per acre at 7.9 cents per pound, compared with 180 pounds at 17 cents per pound state cost. Less than a month remains to enter, with May 15 closing, and farmers may apply to C. L. Gowan, County Agent.

Aiken County Farm Yields and Livestock Valued at Year Start

Aiken County crops and livestock values are detailed from a 1926 report. Cotton tied at 1026 bales and 11.70 per acre, corn 693000 bushels, oats 9000 acres, wheat 725 acres, soybeans 18700 bushels, potatoes and potatoes and sugar cane syrup totals listed. Livestock on farms include 5650 mules, 1526 horses, 4000 milk cows, 121 sheep, 12250 swine with cumulative farm wealth around 3059 and $74.

Death of 76-year-old Abraham Rountree in Madison store

Abraham Rountree, aged 76, well known in Horsecreek Valley, collapsed and died of heart disease Friday night in Richard Hobbs store at Madison. No inquest was held. The report notes the event occurred as the coroner listed cause as heart disease. The day also mentions the Student Club meeting with Mrs. W. B. Turner yesterday afternoon.
