A visitor reported that Austin planned to leave his wife after two months of estrangement. Mrs Price, visiting upstairs, heard a pistol shot and found both spouses dead. the couple had ongoing domestic troubles. The second wife’s family is in Greenwood.
J Pope Matthews pleaded guilty to technical banking violations and was sentenced by Judge John S Wilson in Columbia to pay 5000 or face five to ten years in prison or public works in Richland County. He paid the fine the next day.
Graniteville prepares for a revival at St. John Methodist Church starting next Sunday morning led by Rev. A B Ferguson Jr and evangelist Dr E P Taylor of the Upper South Carolina Conference. The event features a strong musical program with Bettis Academy Glee Club Tuesday night and a large county choir lineup.
The Bank of Western Carliga held its quarterly directors meeting in the head office direc torium with a large delegation in attendance. Reports from branch offices in West na indicated the institution owed a dollar. A luncheon followed at the Hotel Aiken with guests Mr and Mrs H B Hare of Saluda visiting the area.

A party from Aiken left yesterday by motor for Myrtle Beach. The group includes Mr and Mrs Nelson Johnson Mr and Mrs Herbert Johnson Mr and Mrs Charles Weeks Miss Clara Harrigal Mrs Victoria Bonner Mrs John A May and their child Mrs Walter Duncan Monroe Steadman Kelley Toole and P W Townsend. Nelson Johnson will arrange construction of a summer home on a lot bought through Mrs Walter Duncan, Aiken representative for the Myrtle Beach company.

The Chimes of Brittany company will be a standout Redpath Chautauqua attraction featuring a dramatized cathedral choir service with special lighting and scenic effects. Esther Métiak, soprano, leads the production amid performances by the Metropolitan Singers and other noted vocal artists.
The General Assembly debates nuisance taxes on cigars tobacco candy and soft drinks plus a one cent tax and new levies on fruit jars hay and more. A 5 mill property levy is planned with Governor Richards expected to veto a large rise. The omnibus revenue bill aims for about 3.1 million this year and includes reimposed soft drinks tobacco and amusements taxes as well as new levies on cards sporting goods and various glass items. A committee to study tax questions is to report in the next session with a general sales tax favored, despite criticism of the panel and process.
Mrs. Lillian Lindley McKie challenges a life sentence for the Augusta murder of her husband George A. McKie. The defense argues letters admitted at trial were not properly rebutting evidence and cites self defense. The Richmond County Superior Court recently denied a similar appeal.
The Blue Law case against E A Gregory proprietor of The Savoy and Dr M C Mayhew of Youngblood Purvis drug store was postponed to tomorrow as defense attorneys Senator John F Williams and Representative J B Stansfield were away on legislative business. Both stores were not open last Sunday and Gregory said they will close if residents demand it.
Dr and Mrs P J McLean will sail aboard the President McKinley on April 29 from Shanghai and arrive in San Francisco around May 21 returning to the United States. The couple was listed among missionaries returning, bringing relief to anxious friends amid the China war.
Dr. and Mrs. George A. Milner spent Easter Sunday with relatives in Blackville, enjoying a family gathering and holiday arrival.
Richmond publisher John Stewart Bryan presented a drop leaf table to the Confederate Memorial Library Society in honor of Charles H. Taylor. The piece is claimed to be the table where General Grant and General Lee signed terms ending the Civil War at Appomattox. Robert S. Jenkins of Appomattox provided the table and a full history of its provenance.
The Confederate Veterans and Lone of Veterans of South Carolina plan their annual Greenwood reunion May 11 12 and 18 1927. Social events include a campus reception at Lander College a matron sponsor dance and a parade reviewed by top officers with General Charles P Summerall as guest.
The report shows an average profit of 51.04 dollars per acre for 1926 cotton contest contestants, versus a state loss estimate of 7.20 dollars per acre. Contest yields averaged 608 pounds lint per acre at 7.9 cents per pound, compared with 180 pounds at 17 cents per pound state cost. Less than a month remains to enter, with May 15 closing, and farmers may apply to C. L. Gowan, County Agent.
Aiken County crops and livestock values are detailed from a 1926 report. Cotton tied at 1026 bales and 11.70 per acre, corn 693000 bushels, oats 9000 acres, wheat 725 acres, soybeans 18700 bushels, potatoes and potatoes and sugar cane syrup totals listed. Livestock on farms include 5650 mules, 1526 horses, 4000 milk cows, 121 sheep, 12250 swine with cumulative farm wealth around 3059 and $74.
Abraham Rountree, aged 76, well known in Horsecreek Valley, collapsed and died of heart disease Friday night in Richard Hobbs store at Madison. No inquest was held. The report notes the event occurred as the coroner listed cause as heart disease. The day also mentions the Student Club meeting with Mrs. W. B. Turner yesterday afternoon.
Preparations are underway for the AI ken Baptist association second annual Sunday school convention at Shaws Fork Baptist church. It meets Wednesday April 27 for a one day program starting at 10 30 with talks on parental responsibility by Judge George R Webb of Aiken and a sermon by Dr Philip McLean of the First Baptist church in Aiken.
