Blue balloon march raises sexual abuse awareness in Aiken

About 35 to 40 walkers bearing blue balloons and wearing ribbons marched from Laurens Street to the Aiken County Judicial Center for the Breaking the Silence walk organized by the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons. The Walk In My Shoes display featured donated shoes from rape and sexual assault victims lining the courthouse steps.

Two men sentenced in undercover Internet sex crimes case

Steven Wayne Gunter, 52, of Columbia, received 15 years for criminal sexual conduct with a minor with 15 additional years for attempted conduct and 10 for criminal solicitation all to run concurrently. Sanghoon Lee, 29, Cayce, drew 10 years with five years probation after a suspended sentence for criminal solicitation of a minor. Lee is ordered to depart the country.

Sorensen Addresses NAACP Banquet at USC Aiken

Abel P. Nivens, 88, received a standing ovation at the Aiken Branch NAACP Freedom Fund banquet at USC Aiken for lifelong service as an educator. She still runs the Minnie Palmore House in Graniteville, a center for 32 kindergarten students.

Global Night Commute aims to change the world in Aiken event

Thousands join the Global Night Commute to Bethlehem Luther an Church on Whiskey Road April 29. David Neira of South Aiken High School organized the local effort with Sherry Shipes and other teens and adults. Participants will write letters to northern Uganda children and to President Bush and Congress, sleep outdoors to show support, and join a nationwide campaign led by Invisible Children, creators of a documentary on child soldiers.
