Aiken Time Capsule Buried Beneath Obelisk
In Aiken South Carolina city leaders and residents sealed a time capsule under a seven foot obelisk to be opened in 2100. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh penned a letter to the 2100 mayor reflecting on Aiken since 1952 and the city’s heritage including the winter colony, 140 parks, Savannah River Site, the 1993 Strategic Plan and the 1997 All-America City award. The vault, donated by Mitch and Erin Rivers of Rivers Funeral Home, will be buried with community support from the Time Capsule Committee and Bates Landreth’s Landreth Monument Co. The ceremony and inscription honor a future generation with the city seal and a wish to reveal life in Aiken in 2000.
