Moscow Radio announced the launch of an orbital scientific station named Salute with initial observations at 3:40 a.m. EST. Heinz Kaminski noted the object’s orbit meets space station stability criteria. Reliable sources said a manned craft was planned for Earth orbit soon as another step toward an orbital station.
The Supreme Court granted Muhammad Ali 30 minutes to argue why he should be allowed to fight in a country his God won t permit. Ali faced a potential five year prison term for refusing the draft, with a ruling expected before June adjournment.
Rep. Morgan Murphy and Rep. Robert Steele report an epidemic of heroin use among American troops in Vietnam. They blame corrupt Vietnamese officials and easy drug access, citing 10 to 15 percent of troops using high grade heroin.
Newark NJ AP reports the 11 week teachers walkout ends with 80000 students and 4200 teachers returning to classes as the Newark Teachers Union and Board of Education accept a compromise plan proposed by Mayor Kenneth Gibson amid racial tensions and memories of 1967 unrest.
Members of the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks AFL CIO picketed REA Express terminals in a nationwide strike over a contract dispute. A company spokesman denied a full strike but cited threats of walkout after talks broke down in Washington last Friday. Pickets appeared in Chicago. Atlanta reported no disruption.
About thirty thousand spectators jammed Aiken Municipal Airport to watch the U S Air Force Thunderbirds perform intricate formations. Traffic along Highway 1 was heavy and police reported no accidents as the jets roared in at 3 p.m. The crowd stretched along the roads and many watched from the roadside.

Miss Elizabeth Catherine Teague 92 longtime Aiken educator and librarian died Friday in Aiken County Hospital. Funeral at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with burial in the churchyard followed by a flag at half staff. She taught nearly 30 years in Aiken County Schools and started the first library at Aiken High School, later founding Mead Hall library.
