Second career: physics to charter flights in South Carolina
Don Barnes swapped nuclear physics for aviation and now runs Aiken Air Service at Aiken Municipal Airport. The threefold business offers plane rental from three aircraft, flight instruction averaging 55 hours of flight time for about 4,000 dollars, and a Beechcraft Baron charter service spanning the Southeast. Barnes, retired from SAS in 1996, piloted since 1961 and instructing since 1974, with help from wife Linda, serves clients from horse trainers to Derby staff, delivering convenient travel at reasonable costs.
