Aiken taxpayers have until 10 30 p m to mail income tax returns but after 6 p m use the right mailbox. The IRS gave an extra day due to Easter Sunday. Returns placed in the driveway box between 6 and 10 30 p m will carry a Columbia April 16 postmark.
Local grower J W Younce III of Carolina Ridge Orchards says hail hit many orchards but damage extent cannot be estimated yet. He notes peaches are small and damage visibility will grow over a few days making percentage estimates impossible.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and a 20 percent chance of showers tonight with a low around the low 40s and west winds 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with highs in the low 60s, followed by unseasonably cool weather midweek.
Grace Walker of Graniteville saw Cathy Crosby purchase a Richmond County policeman's hat that carried an autographed fifty dollar bill. Cathy Crosby signed the bill, and Lloyd Olsen served as unofficial announcer at the Masters, adding a local flair to the event.
A Friday ruling may allow South Carolina to fine or shut down parts of the Savannah River Plant that violate environmental standards. If upheld on appeal, the decision could give DHEC broader authority over SRP operations while the L-Reactor restart remains delayed by lawsuits over water treatment and wetlands.

The council will hold a first reading on an ordinance to reorganize the Public Service Authority board, shifting control of the Horse Creek Plant to a county office. Also on the docket, third readings to add two ambulances for SRP service and convert SRP land from Forest Service to the Department of Energy.
Former U S secretary of state Dean Rusk told USC Aiken audiences that foreign policy cannot be run by the legislature. He urged credibility between Congress and policy implementers and said the president must be a strong, trusted leader. About 125 people attended the joint USC Aiken Historical Association and political science meeting with Rusk as keynote and papers presented afterward.
