About 130 barrels of hazardous chemical wastes stored in Aiken since last summer are to be sent to Sonnenborn Refractories and Continental Trading Company. Mobay Chemical Corp of Charleston arranged the transfer to Sonneborn and Continental to accept the 55-gallon drums of 2 4 dinitrophenol. The state regards Sonneborn and Continental as generators. Judge James E. Moore ordered the chemicals returned.
Willar Hightower defeated Republican Jane Vaughters by nine votes to win a seat on the Aiken City Council. Precinct by precinct tallies showed a tight race, with a post election recount considered to ensure integrity. Hightower thanked supporters as about 80 well-wishers gathered at his home.
