Mt Etna eruption destroys a century-old observatory near the summit cutting the two mile cable car route. The observatory was empty and no injuries reported as lava flow slows to about forty percent of its initial surge. Police order spectators away from upper areas. villages and sea resorts remain deemed safe.
David R. Poindexter II is acquitted by a federal jury of hiding Angela Davis while she was sought by the FBI as a fugitive. He called the result a minor skirmish in a big war and thanked the jurors after the week-long trial in US District Court.
Teamster leader James R. Hoffa returns to federal prison in Lewisburg Pa after a six day leave to see wife Josephine Hoffa in a San Francisco hospital where her heart ailment shows improvement according to Hoffa and doctors. James P Hoffa Jr assisted driving the rented car to the prison.
NASA awarded a nine month study contract to Lockheed-Georgia to explore future air technology for transport aircraft. General Dynamics and Boeing were also selected for similar Feasibility studies. Each contract is valued at about 1 million dollars and will examine speed, structure, economics, and low noise engines.
Lake Charles police investigated an unusual theft in which a man asleep outside a pool hall woke to find a thief had removed his shoes from his feet. The suspect who reported the incident was not identified.
Florida State University and its Circle K club announce a mock sale of the campus with approval from alumnus Gov. Reubin Askew. Sealed bids due by April 19 would fund Easter Seals, with the highest bidder allowed to rename one building for one week.
La Tarde reports Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro invited to attend a mammoth May Day rally as guest of President Salvador Allende. Castro would arrive April 27 and stay five days, with public confirmation pending his acceptance.
Burma's military ruler Gen Ne Win is back in London receiving further medical treatment after falling ill in New Delhi while returning from previous heart treatment in London. He traveled by stretcher for continued care.

Beckum was selected by the Council of Governments of Aiken and Richmond Counties as chairman at their bi monthly meeting. He succeeds Mayor Cecil Collins of North Augusta with C H Shaw of New Ellenton named vice chairman and Wayne Rogers reelected as director and senior planner for the commission. The council acts as a cooperative planning body required by HUD for the area.
About 2,000 South Vietnamese troops moved to relieve Fire Base 6 in the central highlands as U S B52 bombers dropped 600 tons of bombs near the base. Air support is aiding a ground push with limited contact reported and heightened U S concerns over Vietnamization and reliance on air power.

The plan creates six part-time posts across districts and requires procedural law courses for magistrates within a year. Supporters say annual savings of 10000 to 15000 dollars. local magistrates oppose the reduction.
