Concorde loses tail fragment during world circling flight
A British Airways Concorde with 100 Americans aboard shed a nine foot tail piece while attempting a speed record around the world. The rudder disintegrated at 40,000 feet near Christchurch as the plane flew Mach 1.8. Pilot notified by Sydney control tower and landed safely in Sydney. No injuries. each passenger paid $39,000 for the 38,343 mile trip that began April 1 in London.
