Solicitor finds no wrongdoing in state trails program
The solicitor’s inquiry into the state trails program found poor record keeping but no theft or misappropriation. An internal audit had flagged about 400 000 dollars as misused or unaccounted for, leading to the ouster of program director Jim Schmid in November 2001. Schmid later said the agency won the case against him. He now works for the US Forest Service as a trails specialist in Boise Idaho.

Smallpox vaccine rollout hits snags in North Carolina
North Carolina faces a slow expansion of smallpox inoculations amid concerns over side effects and a lack of compensation plans for sickened recipients. Only 1,125 health workers have been vaccinated, far short of the 7,500 hoped for the first wave, delaying the summer second phase planned for police, firefighters, and EMS workers. Congress has not approved compensation funding, and a General Assembly bill would extend workers’ compensation to those made ill by the vaccine.
