Baghdad raid shows US could enter capital at will
US troops seized Saddam Hussein’s New Presidential Palace and surrounded the Information Ministry and AL-Rashid Hotel in a daylight raid on Baghdad as 70 tanks and 60 Bradley vehicles operated under A10s and drones. Four or five Marines were killed when their vehicle took a direct hit. Marines entered the city on foot, crossing a canal bridge amid light resistance, while an airfield battle nearby left around 100 Iraqi soldiers dead.

Local bagpiper Roy Shull recalls wartime piping days
Roy Shull, 82, learned bagpipes in World War II from a Scottish instructor in North Africa. He later served with the First American Infantry Division and the 16th regiment before joining the 51st Highland English division. After moving to Aiken in 1988 he kept the instrument, bought for $285, and has played at funerals and weddings, reflecting on a life shaped by pipe music and memories of St Andrews Pipe Band days in Miami.
