Fisherman Snags Five Million In Bonds

In New York a fisherman named Raymond Lucas turned over a bag containing five negotiable bonds worth over five million dollars and other securities to police. Lucas found the bag in Jamaica Bay while boating home after fishing and said he sensed something fishy.

Lake name change unpopular in Ai ken County survey

Aiken County residents oppose renaming Clarks Hill Lake to Thurmond Lake with 3 of 5 against. A compromise would keep Clarks Hill while renaming the dam for Sen. Strom Thurmond. The poll of 154 readers was by Survey Research Services during the week of March 23 and has an 8 percent sampling error.

Road Fee Sparks Debate in Aiken County Hearing

A public hearing on Aiken County's $15 road maintenance fee drew outraged comments before the County Council's third reading. Tom King of the Aiken County Libertarian Party warned the fee creates a separate fund to dodge lawsuits and spurs a tax revolt as more residents refuse to pay. In Columbia AP supporters of a local option sales tax pledge to bring the bill back to the Senate. Sen Leatherman says momentum remains and a Tuesday vote showed growing support while the Senate budget process narrows time for action. The bill would let local governments levy a sales tax to fund property tax rollbacks with voter referendums. A House version differed on the allocation of funds.
