The government reports March unemployment at 7.8 percent, with about 250000 new jobs and a 220000 rise in the civilian labor force, leaving the rate unchanged despite a small decline. Also noted are weather outlooks and a crash update from Belvedere and a court docket in Aiken County.

Aiken County Sheriff Ralph Gunnells reports the alleged hit man refuses to name his employer or the payment. Joe Harris and two others were arrested after escaping Goodman Correction Institution to disrupt a campaign event and threaten the sheriff’s wife. Investigations involve local and state agencies with the FBI not yet engaged.
The June sheriff primary in Salley opened with five Democratic candidates presenting brief qualifications at the Civic Center. Incumbent Ralph Gunnells, Raymond Holley, Jack Atkinson, Gene Clark, and George McCormick spoke briefly while Bryan Dorn urged greater voter participation and freedom, praising South Carolina and Aiken County.
