Traffic stopping snapping turtle found in downtown Aiken
A snapping turtle halted traffic at Park Avenue and Newberry Street in downtown Aiken on Tuesday morning before volunteers removed it. University of Georgia ecologist Whit Gibbons suggested the male turtle was moving from one aquatic area to another, possibly in search of a mate or a new habitat, possibly from Hopelands Gardens or Hitchcock Woods, and noted rains likely spurred its movement.
