Timely Writer, the Aiken trained standout, won the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park by two lengths over Star Gallant to solidify his status as the Kentucky Derby favorite. Muttering captured the Santa Anita Derby by nose over Prince Spellbound, boosting Derby prospects for both races.
