Becky Geeting leads a free 55 plus aerobics class at Gregg Park Recreation Center held Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 15 to 3 45 PM. The program started with four participants and has grown to ten with high attendance as it promotes health and social interaction for seniors.
The City of Aiken Parks and Recreation Department sponsors two senior programs the Pairs and Spares of the H O Weeks Center and the Smith Hazel Senior Citizens Arts and Crafts Club. The Pairs and Spares meet second Thursday monthly at 4 pm January to April and at 5 pm May to December for a covered dish dinner. The Smith Hazel club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 am with refreshments. Pauline Farrer, Carol Dasher, Valarie Charles, Dot Hamilton, Doris Johnson share positive notes on exercise and community. The class is held in the afternoons due to Mrs Geeting teaching at Mead Hall and will move to mornings after school ends.
The South Carolina Legislature approved a driver refresher course for seniors. The Aiken Area Council on Aging will host an eight hour training May 17–18 with two half day sessions. Cost is $8 for materials. Call 648-5447 or visit 159 Morgan St. Aiken to register. I CARE seeks trained volunteers to assist elders with Medicare and health insurance questions. Seniors join The Aiken S.A.L.T. program to police the parking lot and assist police. Contact Dr. Gene Redd at 642-9679 for details, available 7 30 to 9 pm weekdays.
