Clemson University agricultural economics professor Jim Rathwell says weather competition and rising costs are shrinking Upstate peach farms. He notes only five or six major growers may remain in the region within a few years and that 1981 was the last truly profitable year for the industry.
Police say at least 120 people under 21 were arrested on the Grand Strand during Easter Weekend for drinking or buying alcohol. A special team from the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission conducted the operation Friday and Saturday, averaging about 60 arrests per night. Of those charged, 94 were for possession of beer or wine underage.

Secretary of State George P. Shultz met with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir in Jerusalem to press direct negotiations and oppose a Palestinian state. The two-hour session focused on 242, borders, and the plan for May 1 self-rule talks, with Shamir warning of uncertain outcomes. The U.S. plan faced opposition from Israel, Jordan, and Syria, while the PLO in Tunis rejected the May 1 talks and vowed to thwart the plan amid a regional strike.
